Workshops

The Rhythm Room Enrichment Program  explores world music as it relates to today’s pop culture, combining discussion, demonstration and participation. The use of world percussion, drum set, buckets and exploring percussion from objects and one’s own body (clapping, stomping, etc.) is educational as well as motivational and fun.

You need not have any percussion experience to relate to the programs. Innerythms will cater programs to the student and/or educator audience, with special consideration to grade level and specific subject matter. This workshop will generate an exciting avenue for the teacher and the student to use music in a fun, educational way to enhance learning and develop their own inner rhythm.

School’s Educational Programs: Expose students to the art of drums, percussion and rhythm through general assemblies, individual classroom settings and after-school programs and workshops.

Educator Workshops: Teachers are immersed in a wide variety of genres designed to improve their knowledge and skill base of ethnic music, musical listening skills and oral traditions. Percussion styles will be presented in a manner for the teacher to use as learning tools within their classroom. Examples of incorporating rhythm into curriculum for a more cultural experience will be presented: a math teacher can explain the breakdown of numbers through rhythmic exercises; a history teacher can demonstrate ethnic instruments and their relationship to a society’s religious and social beliefs and music teachers can incorporate the art of hand percussion, capitalizing on its growing popularity.

 

Music is a universal language, a form of Communication, of Art:
Rick will explain the execution of hand motion to bring out the proper voice of each drum and demonstrate how a percussionist can tell a story with rhythm and theatrical flair.

 

Rhythm is a Mathematical equation: “The most controversial finding is that learning music can help children do better at math… Music involves proportions, ratios, sequences – all of which underlie mathematical reasoning.“ (Music on the Mind)

Rhythm and History: Rick will demonstrate various hand percussion instruments and briefly discuss histories of each, creating a musical timeline: from hand percussion, to Djemba, to electric drums, to the traditional drum kit.

Skill and Social Development: The program concludes with students exploring their own inner rhythm and developing confidence by playing in a creative and supportive drum circle.

I wish to sincerely thank Rick Morin and The Rhythm Room for their performance and clinic at the Gibbons School. It was truly one of the finest presentations I have ever seen at the Gibbons in my 22 years as a teacher there.  I speak to the quality of this show as both a teacher and a musician.  Mr. Morin, as the leader of his “percussive ensemble”, was very engaging.  The children responded with great enthusiasm to his requests to “stomp”, “clap”, and “wave”.  His troupe members were equally personable and charismatic.  The level of musicianship was superb!  Rick and The Rhythm Room help us all, from 10 to 44 years old, realize and express our inner beats! The show, in a word, was thunderouslysyncopatedfun.
